Marie-Jose Njoku-Obi

San Francisco born, Inglewood based contemporary artist Marie-Jose began painting in 2016 with the goal of rendering black bodies in various states of existence, using surrealism as a tool for introspection or inspiration for an unseen future. Many scenes offer dreamlike cloudscapes and thematic metaphors representing life, love, courage, and vulnerability. They utilize acrylic paint, gouache, decorative paper, faux pearls, shells, and other materials to enforce the complexity of our human nature. The work touches several spheres of interest, and aims to bring feelings of fantasy, vulnerability, and contemplation to the surface to promote dialogue and connection. Their work has been exhibited across several states, and they recently participated in an Artist in Residence program in Fukuoka, Japan.
