KJ Cunningham grew up in a haunted house in the rural Midwest. She studied in St. Louis and Chicago before heading West. Her research at DePaul University—where she received her graduate degree—was in Postwar American literature, Gender Studies, American Studies, and the Beats (particularly the memoirs of female Beats). After teaching college English for nearly a decade, KJ left academia to return to her writing + painting practice. Much of her work explores abstract narrative, fashion, boundaries and residues.
