FAWLENE AZIZA

Fawlene Aziza (Copeland) (b. 1994) is a South Central Los Angeles-based painter whose work offers a somatic lens into her life experiences, the culture of her community, and the political footprints that have directly affected and continue to affect her environment.

Through her practice, Aziza depicts archival landmarks and subjects who gracefully engage against political gaze, subjugation, and erasure. Her use of color (or lack thereof) and brush strokes provides an element of movement, beauty, and humanity that can be inferred as synchronistic with an "unseen," naturalistic otherwise.
