About the artist

My work focuses on exploring the Pictorial Window in relationship to two and three dimensional space. A presents a cross between the disciplines of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, through a reconsideration of the position of the ‘frame’ of Painting.

Mercier has pursued simultaneous professional careers in painting, sculpture and architecture, with numerous exhibits and projects to date. Born and raised just outside of Detroit Michigan, where he completed a Bachelor of Science in Architecture at Lawrence University before going on to study in Milan, Italy at ‘Architecture Intermundium’ under Daniel Libeskind. From there he moved to Los Angeles, completed a Master degree in Architecture at SCI-ARC and worked for various localarchitects including Frank Gehry. In 2002 he left Gehry partners and started his own architectural practice,(fer) studio where he continues today. His painting studio is directly adjacent to hisarchitecture office, allowing him to be continually engage in both disciplines on a daily basis.

Throughout his entire educational and professional career he has worked as both artist and architect. This has allowed him to develop a uniquely diverse artistic view that combines painting, sculpture and architecture in an attempt to form a more comprehensive understanding of contemporary space.
