About the artist
I am an artist with a home in Orange County, but I show and work in Los Angeles. My studio is at 313 Beach ST, Inglewood, CA90405.I will be showing abstract paintings along with abstract quilts made by my sister. We are the team Ann Marie & Joan Rousseau.
A.M. Rousseau is a multi-disciplined artist, writer and photographer who has exhibited her work nationally and internationally.
She is the recipient of a National Endowment in the Arts Fellowship, The Djerassi Foundation Affymax Fellowship, the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Artist Residency, Yaddo Artist residency, the Virginia Center for the Arts residency, the Manhattan Borough President’s Award for Excellence and Service in the Arts, and the Harc Foundation Award. Several iconic configurations have captured her attention: line, the spiral, the chalice, and recurrent archetypes in art history.
Using a deceptively simple formulation of connecting one line to another she takes her inspiration from a Paul Klee dictum: “Take a line for a walk, aimlessly for the sake of the walk.” What happens in between is the subject of her work and a metaphor for “the walk of life.”
The “Art of History” series investigates the enduring connection between our past and present through reinterpretations of classic objects that have been preserved in museums and elsewhere. Each painting represents a creation of a world and man/women’s unceasing ability to persevere, prosper and thrive.
She received her undergraduate degree from the Massachusetts College of Art and a Master’s Degree in Fine art from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY. She also attended the New York Studio School for Painting and Sculpture and a summer program at the Skowhegan School for Painting and Sculpture.
Joan Rousseau is a long-time artistic quilt maker. Her quilts each tell a story as varied as the subject of walking through Central Park on a winter’s day to a summer on the sea at Shelter Island. She does with a needle and thread what painters do with paint and canvas. Her quilts are unique, beautiful, expressions both abstract and realistic of compositions in fabric that are evocative and timeless.
